Label Spotlight: Stones Throw

By | Client Appreciation | No Comments

In 1996, after recording for many labels as an artist/producer, Peanut Butter Wolf (real name Chris Manak) realized he enjoyed promoting records just as much as recording them and became confident that he could succeed in running a label. So Stones Throw was born with its first release being “My World Premier”, the first record Peanut Butter Wolf recorded with his late friend/rapper Charizma.  Since then, Stones Throw has grown into a multi-generational, international powerhouse in the underground music scene. In regards to the music on the label, Manak has said “I put out what I personally like and save the rest for the other labels out there.”

The label has gained fame for releasing acclaimed hip-hop records, including Madvillain’s (a collaboration between producer Madlib and MF DOOM) highly-acclaimed debut album Madvillainy in 2004, as well as J Dilla’s album Donuts, which was praised by Pitchfork Media with a perfect 10/10 score, saying “It’s a widely praised favorite for so many people, and yet there’s something about Donuts that feels like such an intensely personal statement”.

Today Stones Throw continues to be one of the leading names in underground hip-hop circles with a cult following and was recently featured in the documentary “Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton.”

Label Spotlight: Jagjaguwar

By | Client Appreciation | No Comments

Jagjaguwar, a name taken from a Dungeons & Dragons character name-generating program,  is an independent rock label based in Bloomington, Indiana.  It was founded by Darius Van Arman when his friends’ band, The Curious Digit, had an album recorded without a label to release it.  They had previously released a 7″ record on the short-lived label Sentimental, which was co-run by Van Arman and a friend Dawson Prater.  The band decided that it was best to have any label attached to the project rather than none and JAG was launched.

Shoeless Joe’s Ultimate Bartender Challenge

By | Client Appreciation | No Comments

PCMusic was at Shoeless Joe’s last Wednesday, celebrating their Ultimate Bar Challenge, an annual competition that pitted some of the best Shoeless Joe’s booze handlers in Ontario against each other.  It was a friendly competition that focused on showmanship so, at any given time, the competition stage looked like a scene out of Cocktail.

There were a lot of great bar tricks performed and, though there wasn’t a taste test for the audience, we’re sure the cocktails were delicious. PCMusic congratulates all of this year’s contestants and we’re looking forward to next year’s competition!

Label Spotlight: OVO Sound

By | Client Appreciation | No Comments

At this point Drake is a household name with the unprecedented star power to drop an informal track and see it become a billboard top-ten and gold record.   But it wasn’t that long ago where he’d release mixtape after mixtape without garnering much attention.  Luckily for him, and now a stable of artists, Drake finally cut through in 2009 with So Far Gone which lead to him signing with Young Money and releasing 3 number one albums, and a long list of hit singles.  Following up on his success as a recording artist, Drake, along with Noah “40” Shebib, and Oliver El Khatib founded OVO Sound in 2012.

Shortly after founding the label, OVO signed a partnership deal with Warner Bros Records.  Similar to how Rick Ross is signed as a solo artist to Def Jam and his Maybach Music Group artists are signed under Atlantic, Drake will still be signed as a solo artist to Republic Records through Young Money/Cash Money but the artists he signs to OVO Sound will be distributed through Warner Bros Records. Since its inception OVO Sound has signed artists and producers alike and their roster now includes; Drake, ILoveMakonnen, Majid Jordan, PartyNextDoor, Justice, T-Fluent, Boi-1da, Mike Zombie, Noah “40” Shebib, T-Minus, Future The Prince and Nineteen85

The Counter – A Customized Experience

By | Client Appreciation | No Comments

The concept at The Counter Burger is a simple one: Choice.  When The Counter was established (or anti-established, as they like to say) in 2003, they wanted to present burger aficionados with a new spin on the classic burger joint.  In pursuit of this, they came to the conclusion that nobody can tailor a burger for you better than…well, you!  As such, the “Custom Burger” was born.

The first thing you’ll receive when entering The Counter, is the order form.  You fill it out to suit your burger needs to a “T”.  Start by selecting the burger itself: Beef, Chicken, Turkey, or Vegan Veggie; the size of the burger; and the vessel  – you can have it served on a bun or in a bowl!  Then you move on to one of over 12 different cheese selections (including gruyere or herb goat cheese spread – hello!), before you arrive at the toppings, or premium toppings.  All this leads you to a vast array of sauces before finally getting to the sides and then…well, you’re starting to get the picture.  With over 312,120 different burger combination possibilities, rarely is the same burger ever made twice in one day, and you can change your burger every, mouth-watering, time you step up to The Counter.

Goin’ Up the Country with Ted’s Montana Grill

By | Client Appreciation | No Comments

They say that Jack’s-of-all-Trades are masters of none. If there is one exception it is the Georgian entrepreneur Ted Turner. While being a billion dollar philanthropist, owner of CNN, TBS, the Atlanta Braves, and being one of the largest private land owners in America today – his exploits in the restaurant business are equally as impressive.

Ted Turner has always done things a little differently – and when it comes to operating a restaurant he pulls no punches.
Pulling from the era of days-gone-by Ted’s Montana Grill uses only bison that were raised on Ted Turner’s own personal ranch in (where else?) Montana. This gives diners from Rockefeller Center to Boulder, Colorado a true taste of the Good Ole West. Read More
